Tasmanian exporters to benefit from new Bass Strait shipping service
TASMANIAN exporters have never had it better, with three of the world’s largest shipping lines soon to be competing for the local trade, says Tasmanian Logistics Committee chairman Brett Charlton. The world’s largest shipping line, Maersk, will this month include Bell Bay in its new weekly trans-Tasman shipping service, which will enable goods to be taken to Melbourne or Sydney for global connections. Mr Charlton said Maersk would join MSC, the world’s second-largest container carrier, which began calling into Bell Bay fortnightly, as part of its trans-Tasman service, two years ago and has announced plans to expand calls to twice weekly. He said GMA CGM, the world’s third-largest global shipping giant, was competing for Tasmanian cargoes in partnership with Toll, operator of an overnight Burnie-Melbourne service. “We also have extra capacity with the new SeaRoad ship,’’ he said. http://www.ntnews.com.au/news/tasmanian-exporters-to-benefit-from-new-bass-strait-shipping-service/news-story/8ae2b74d63971eb7762ca88cbf75e6f6
Mediterranean Shipping Company makes first regular service call to Bell Bay
Tasmania has a new international freight shipping service, with the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) beginning its promised fortnightly run last week. MSC’s Antigua-flagged containership Hohebank left Bell Bay on February 27. The service moves freight from Bell Bay to Sydney and Melbourne, with the option to then connect with international freight services or stay with the same ship to New Caledonia and then New Zealand. The fortnightly loop is concluded with the service moving back across the Tasman to Melbourne and then Bell Bay. The new route across Bass Strait was announced in January. It came after the Tasmanian state government selected Swire Shipping to create a new direct Tasmania to Asia service. http://www.fullyloaded.com.au/logistics-news/1503/new-tasmanian-shipping-service-sets-off/
